Blogs have come a long way from their first predecessors in the 1990s. Now, they are not just for personal expression—blogs have become powerful awareness-raising, marketing, and income-generating tools. To maximize the benefits of a blog, it must effectively and reliably deliver high-quality content that engages readers and keeps them coming back.

Here are some tips for effective blog writing:

  • Know who you want to reach. When you know who you are talking to, you know what they need, what they want, and how to best reach them. You know their problems, aspirations, and what kind of solutions they are looking for. Those are the things you need to write about.
  • Demand attention. The internet is teeming with too much information. Your title and opening paragraph must be powerful enough to make users click and read your blog. Use emotion, highlight benefits, stress unique points, and create urgency. 
  • Be trustworthy. Readers value useful content from a source they trust. Establish your credibility through the depth of knowledge and experience contained in your posts.
  • Be easy to find.Search engine optimization (SEO) is a must. Make sure your title is optimized, have anchor text, and ensure your keywords appear a sufficient number of times. Readers tend to remember the first and last sentences, so make sure your keywords are there too!
  • Inform, educate, help. Readers will keep coming back to you if you offer them something new and useful every time they visit.
  • Tell a story. If your reader sees his own struggles in your story, he will read on to know how it can be resolved.
  • Use the power of images. A photo can grab attention and show in a split-second what can take several paragraphs of text to describe.  Use this to your advantage.
  • Make it easy to share. Readers instinctively want to share content that resonates with them. Make it easier for them by adding attractive and prominent “share” buttons.
  • Time your posts. If you know your audience well, you know when they will most likely be reading your blog and why. Schedule your posts for maximum relevance and exposure.
  • Motivate them to action. Don’t beat around the bush. Encourage them to do what you want them to do by expressly calling on them to act.
